ফরহাদ খান-এর জন্ম ২৩শে ডিসেম্বর, ১৯৪৫। পৈতৃক নিবাস কুষ্টিয়া জেলার মিরপুর থানার আমলাতে হলেও বর্তমান আবাস রাজশাহী শহরের পদ্মা আবাসিক এলাকায়।
রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে বাংলাভাষা ও সাহিত্যে বি.এ. (অনার্স) ও এম.এ. ১৯৬৮ ও ১৯৬৯ সালে। কর্মজীবন শুরু ১৯৭০-এ কুষ্টিয়ার কুমারখারি কলেজে। সেখান থেকে বাংলা একাডেমীতে ১৯৭৩ সালে। বাংলা একাডেমীর ভাষা-সাহিত্য, সংস্কৃতি ও পত্রিকা বিভাগের পরিচালক পদ থেকে অবসর গ্রহণ ২০০২ সালে।
মাঝে ১৯৮৮ থেকে ১৯৯১ পর্যন্ত তিন বছর ডেপুটেশনে কাজ করেছেন জার্মানিতে, ডয়েটশে ভেলে রেডিয়োতে, বাংলা বিভাগের অন্যতম সম্পাদক হিসেবে।
ভাষা ও হরফসহ ব্যতিক্রমী বিভিন্ন বিষয় নিয়ে অল্পকিছু বই রয়েছে তাঁর। বাংলা একাডেমী ছোটদের অভিধানসহ তিনটি বইয়ের সম্পাদনার সঙ্গেও যুক্ত ছিলেন।
মাঝেমধ্যে পত্রিকায় লেখালেখি আর বাংলাদেশ টেলিভিশনে ভাষাবিষয়ক অনুষ্ঠান ‘মাতৃভাষা’-র নিয়মতি উপস্থাপনা নিয়ে কাটছে তাঁর বর্তমান দিনকাল।
